Today, we want to honor and celebrate the life and enduring legacy of John Ward. A truly remarkable archaeologist, a beloved friend, and a cherished colleague, his passion and dedication have left an indelible mark on the field and on all who knew him. It was our great privilege to serve as his and Dr. Maria Nilsson’s media agent for the past seven years, a partnership that we proudly continue with Maria.

Together with his wife and research partner, Dr. Maria Nilsson, John was a pillar of the archaeological community, dedicating his life to uncovering the mysteries of ancient Egypt. Since 2012, he served as the assistant director of the Gebel el-Silsila Project, a monumental mission he and Maria founded. Their work has illuminated over 10,000 years of human history at this vast site, a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of archaeologists.

John was more than an archaeologist; he was a passionate explorer, a familiar face on television, and a founding trustee of the Friends of Silsila, a charity dedicated to preserving this historical site. His commitment to his work was matched only by his love for his family.

We extend our deepest condolences to Maria, their family, and the entire Gebel el-Silsila team. John’s contributions to the world of archaeology and his unwavering passion for discovery will be deeply missed. His legacy lives on in the fascinating finds he helped bring to light and the countless lives he touched through his work.
